Barolo Villero 1997

1997

The 1997 Barolo Villero, from one of the most important vineyards in Castiglione Falletto, is structured and powerful. It is characterized by smooth and soft tannins, destined to age well over time. The 1997 Villero comes from separate harvests for the production of different cuvées. After 18 months of aging in wood, these are blended, and the wine is bottled.

Vegetative cycle

The dry and mild climate of the early months of 1997 favored the early sprouting of the grapevines by 20-30 days, after which flowering and fruit set – ahead of the average – proceeded regularly and rapidly.
The rainy month of June promoted the enlargement of the grapes and vegetation, with greater uniformity among the plants and vineyards. The hot days of July further encouraged early development.
In the second decade of the month, veraison began, and the presence of an August with good weather alternating with a few well-distributed rainy days helped accelerate ripening.
The month of September was excellent, warm, with little precipitation, appropriately ventilated, capable of increasing, for our 1997 Barolo Villero, the sugar level of the grapes and reducing acidity, especially malic acidity.

Climatic trend

In the Langhe region, 1997 was exceptional both in terms of weather conditions and magnitude of weather events. The year, which started with bad weather, biting cold and many snowfalls, was characterized from the end of January until May by a long period of dry climate and, often, above-average temperatures.

The most rainy month was June: its 130 mm of precipitation re-established only in part the average level of annual water availability. The scarcity of rain in the first months came up again in the following months, to such an extent that precipitation from January to September ’97 was 60% of the average of the period.

As for temperatures, 1997 was a warm year, often above-average, both in the first months and the summer and early autumn, with positive effects on the sugar accumulation of grapes for 1997’s Barolo Villero.
