Barolo 1997

1997

The Barolo 1997 comes from the finest vineyards in Castiglione Falletto. It is characterized by smooth and soft tannins, destined to last over time. The selection of the best plots offers a perfect synthesis of the territory, in its most elegant expression. After 18 months of aging in wood, these are assembled and the wine is bottled.

Vegetative cycle

The dry and mild climate of the first months of 1997 favored an early budding of the vines by about 20-30 days. Subsequently, flowering and fruit set occurred earlier than average, proceeding regularly and swiftly. June, characterized by rain, facilitated the development of the berries and vegetation, ensuring greater uniformity among plants and vineyards. July, with hot days, further supported the early ripening.
In the second half of July, veraison began, and a mostly sunny August, interspersed with few and well-distributed rainfalls, accelerated the ripening process. September was exceptional, with warm temperatures and low precipitation, adequately ventilated, favoring for our Barolo 1997 an increase in sugar levels in the grapes and a reduction in acidity, especially malic acidity.

Climatic trend

In the Langhe area, the harvest of 1997 was extraordinary, both in terms of climatic conditions and the evolution of atmospheric conditions and the magnitude of observed phenomena. The year began with unstable weather, marked by intense cold and abundant snowfall. From the third decade of January until May, there was a long period of dry weather, often with temperatures above average. June was the rainiest month, with 130 mm of precipitation partially restoring the average annual level of water resources. The lack of rain in the early months continued into the following months, so much so that from January to September ’97, precipitation was only 60% of the average for that period. 1997 was characterized by warmth, with values often above normal, both in the early months and during the summer and early autumn, positively impacting the accumulation of sugars in the grapes destined for Barolo 1997.
