Vegetative cycle

From the point of view of the length of the vegetative cycle of vines, 2017 shows significant differences from other early vintages. This year, the period from sprouting to technological maturity, although early, averaged 185 days, while in previous similar vintages it fluctuated around 170 days, compared to 200 days in vintages considered ‘late’.
In summary, for 2017 Barolo Villero it was an early year, but the vine still managed to complete its growing cycle adequately.

Climatic trend

This year will be remembered for its warm weather and, above all, for the scarcity of rain. The winter was mild with little snowfall, while spring saw some rainfall and temperatures above the seasonal average, favoring early vine development, which was constant throughout the season. Starting in May, a long period of good weather began thanks to the passage of many anticyclones.

Starting in the first week of September, temperatures dropped significantly and we noticed a trend closer to seasonal averages, with significant temperature variations between day and night. This situation favored the polyphenolic profile of black grapes with a medium-long growing cycle, such as Nebbiolo, which recorded distinct data compared to other great vintages. In fact, improvements in both quantity and extraction were observed for 2017 Barolo Villero.
